Epidemiology of psychiatric disorders in late life is the study of the distribution of psychiatric disorders and psychiatric symptoms among older adults and the variables that affect the distribution. In this chapter, the findings of demographers and epidemiologists are reviewed as they relate to the care of older adults with psychiatric impairments. Because the determinants or factors that affect these disorders are covered in later chapters that are specifically devoted to the disorders, we include in this chapter only cursory descriptions to provide a sense of how epidemiology informs such studies.
